A Note from Michael:
Since literature asks of readers that we struggle to make thoughtful evaluations of character(s), I hope that this literary exercise will enhance our interpretive skills and stimulate our sympathetic connections to an-other. The four very different stories, each in its unique way, illustrate the necessity, or difficulty, or failure to experience and act on an impulse that enables a character to address the other in compassionate, dignified human terms. I hope our discussions may not only probe the complex meanings of these stories but also provide us the opportunity to explore ways of being and acting in our own world.

About the Facilitator

Michael Kaufman has a doctorate in English and American literature and has taught a broad variety of literary courses both within universities and outside the academy to business and professional groups. For the past several years, he has taught classes in Brandeis’ adult learning institute (BOLLI).
