Join us for a study of the prophet Isaiah this Shabbat.
Starting this week, the calendar of haftarot (prophetic readings) on Shabbat are all passages of comfort, taking us from the devastation of Tisha B'Av to the hopefulness of the New Year.
Let's delve into Isaiah 40:1-26 to explore this message of hope and comfort after a catastrophe.
To prepare, in addition, please read Isaiah 1:1-27, last week's haftarah. We will compare the two different Isaiahs and their messages.
If possible, please bring your own copy, which you can find in a TANAKH (Hebrew Bible) or in a Chumash (5 Books of the Torah with haftarot). Look for the first two portions in Dvarim (Deuteronomy)
You can review short introduction to the Book of Isaiah.
Note that this book contains the work of two different prophets.
The first, named Isaiah, wrote chapters 1-39. Last week's portion, warning of impending destruction, was written by that prophet.
The second, who uses the name Isaiah but their true identity remains unknown, wrote chapters 44-66. Second Isaiah, also known as Deutero-Isaiah, lived 200 years after the first and is the source of this week's message of consolation.
