Cuba and Its Jewish Community

Join Merle Wolofsky for a member chat about her trip to Cuba.

“Es iz schwer tzu sein a yid." Melancholy words from, from Sholem Aleichem, “It is hard to be a Jew.”

Yet somehow after 90% of their compatriots left, and decades of prohibitive restrictions when it became possible to "come out”, the 1,500 Jews left in Cuba have begun to reclaim their heritage. In 2007 The Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue of Montreal had organized a mission to the Havana Jewish Community, which Merle joined. She will be sharing her impressions of life under communism and the resulting physical and cultural implications and the resiliency of the people.
