Shabbat Nariya is now SHABBAT RINA!
Rina is a Hebrew word that means joy, often with a connotation of music. This is what we want to create in our prayer space! We want the words, the harmonies, and the feeling of pure joy to fill your spirit.
Here is what you can expect:
On the night of Shabbat Rina, the sanctuary will be arranged with chairs in concentric circles, with instruments in the center. Most of our time will be spent on Kabbalat Shabbat, beginning with Yedid Nefesh, continuing with specific verses from the psalms of Kabbalat Shabbat, and including a memorable L'cha Dodi. There will be a songsheet with Hebrew, translation, and transliteration of each song. A few people will offer kavanot, or short intentions, before various verses that we sing together. Following Kabbalat Shabbat, we will have a short and songful Ma'ariv service (no more than 30 minutes), finishing with Oseh Shalom. Then we will head downstairs for a community potluck dinner.
Every voice counts at Shabbat Rina, no matter how "well" you can sing. Even if the words are new, you can always sing yai dai dai or another syllable of your choice. There is no amplification of singers and instruments during Kabbalat Shabbat, and our sound is only as potent as all our voices are together. We invite you to join us in raising our voices together, creating a circle of musical sound to welcome in Shabbat!
